This year’s challenge:Address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color. This year, we are focusing on the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color. The Coronavirus pandemic is shining a light on the systemic racial oppression that has been part of this country from the very outset, and the results are horrific: almost one third of all Black people know someone who has died of COVID-19, while only one tenth of white people do. In New York City, 75% of all essential workers are people of color, while nationwide, Black people are dying at 2.4 times the rate of white people. In New York City, the zip codes with the highest rates of the virus are overrepresented by Latinos and Asians.
